Small Software, Niche Marketplaces, Real Money

11 examples of creators turning platform-specific tools, plugins, templates, and assets into meaningful revenue

Research checked August 20, 2026Historical dates preservedNot income guarantees

Read the numbers correctly: historical and self-reported numbers are examples, not expected outcomes. Reported revenue, marketplace gross sales, creator proceeds, and profit are different things; this report keeps those categories separate.

01 / Thesis

The shelf already exists.

A micro-SaaS is a small, focused software business—often sold by subscription. Several examples here are instead plugins, templates, or assets. They share the important model: a platform-native product placed where buyers already search.

Platforms aggregate buyers with an active need. That means a narrow product can produce meaningful revenue without becoming a venture-scale company. AI can lower the labor needed to create and maintain useful digital inventory—utilities, plugins, bots, templates, themes, profiles, and assets—but it does not manufacture demand. The practical move is one narrowly useful painkiller, then adjacent products that reuse the same code, research, audience, or design system. Distribution and narrow usefulness matter more than another generic AI wrapper. Income can be low marginal distribution, not fully passive: marketplace products still require support, compatibility work, updates, and attention to platform rules. Build original products; copy the business pattern and unmet need, never another seller’s code, assets, branding, or protected content.

02 / Opportunity lanes

Three ways to play this.

Choose a lane based on where you can understand the buyer’s problem and tolerate the ongoing work.

Fastest shelf

Templates and digital assets

Examples: Framer, Webflow, Envato, Superhive.

Advantages:

  • Little or no hosted backend
  • One-time sales
  • Fast catalog expansion

Risks: Crowded visual categories, compatibility and support, easy imitation.

Best recurring utility

Embedded workflow software

Examples: Google Workspace, Wix, WordPress, GitHub.

Advantages:

  • Recurring operational value
  • Existing user workflow
  • Higher switching friction

Risks: APIs, authentication, billing, privacy, support.

Best deep-niche intent

Specialist platforms

Examples: Unity, BuiltByBit/Minecraft, Discord, Blender.

Advantages:

  • Customers know what they need
  • Forums and reviews reveal demand
  • Small niches can support specialized products

Risks: Domain expertise, version compatibility, high support expectations.

03 / Starter bets

Pragmatic starting points—not guarantees.

These fit the marketplace pattern because each begins with a visible, narrow job instead of a broad AI claim.

Bet A

AI-assisted job-photo case-study widget

Platforms: Wix first; WordPress second.

Core workflow: upload before/after photos; compare with a slider; draft editable captions and alt text; produce an editable transformation summary; generate a case-study block; add lead capture; optionally output structured project data.

Customers: remodelers, restoration companies, landscapers, detailers, medspas, photographers.

The underlying simple category has produced a disclosed six-figure Wix exit. Exact operating revenue was not disclosed; see the inferred exit-based example.

Bet B

Narrow Google Sheets workflow add-on

Possible wedges:

  • Contractor estimate cleanup and comparison
  • Job-cost import and categorization
  • Lead deduplication and follow-up queue
  • SEO or PPC anomaly digest
  • Proposal generation from structured rows
  • Invoice and receipt normalization

Do not sell “AI for spreadsheets.” Sell one reliable outcome inside a workflow where the rows already exist.

Bet C

Vertical Framer/Webflow template catalog

Start with three related products using one design system:

  • Contractor lead-generation site
  • Project-gallery/case-study site
  • Service-area landing-page system

Catalog economics are stronger than betting everything on one template: adjacent products reuse the system while giving buyers more ways to enter.

One useful exception: if Mike already spends substantial time in a gaming or creator platform, building for that platform may beat entering a larger market where he lacks domain knowledge.

04 / Evidence legend

Signals, not a blended leaderboard.

“Verified revenue” is intentionally not used: none of these sources states that a third party verified the financials.

05 / Revenue signals

Keep reported, modeled, and inferred values separate.

Bars use a common $9,000 scale only for within-chart visual context. They do not rank current revenue.

08 / Research process

How to find the next one.

Start with an existing marketplace, then use visible buying behavior to decide whether a small product deserves a build.

  1. 01Choose a platform whose users already purchase add-ons.
  2. 02Inspect search suggestions, product counts, prices, update dates, sales counts, reviews, forum requests, and recurring one-star complaints.
  3. 03Identify one repetitive problem with a measurable outcome.
  4. 04Validate APIs, approval requirements, privacy requirements, and support burden before building.
  5. 05Build the smallest useful paid version.
  6. 06Convert the same core into adjacent products or vertical versions.
  7. 07Preserve customer contact and off-platform documentation only where platform rules permit it.

Do not scrape private data, evade marketplace rules, copy competitors, or use unlicensed assets. The aim is original, durable usefulness.

09 / Reality check

The costs are not just code.

Marketplaces reduce the need to create an audience from zero; they do not remove the operating obligations of a product business.
